Monotonicity of Sequences Involving Convex and Concave Functions

Let f be an increasing and convex (concave) function on [0, 1) and φ a positive increasing concave function on [0,∞) such that φ(0) = 0 and the sequence { φ(i+1) ( φ(i+1) φ(i) − 1 )} i∈N decreases ( the sequence { φ(i) ( φ(i) φ(i+1) − 1 )} i∈N increases ) . Then the sequence { 1 φ(n) ∑n−1 i=0 f ( φ(i) φ(n) )} n∈N is increasing. Mathematics subject classification (2000): 26D15, 26A51.

On Monotonicity of F-blowup Sequences

For each variety in positive characteristic, there is a series of canonically defined blowups, called F-blowups. We are interested in the question of whether the e+1-th blowup dominates the e-th, locally or globally. It is shown that the answer is affirmative (globally for any e) when the given variety is F-pure. As a corollary, we obtain some result on the stability of the sequence of F-blowup...

On Monotonicity of Some Combinatorial Sequences

Recently the second author [3] posed many conjectures on monotonicity of sequences of the type ( n+1 √ an+1/ n √ an)n>N with (an)n>1 a familiar combinatorial sequence of positive integers. Throughout this paper, we set N = {0, 1, 2, . . .} and Z = {1, 2, 3, . . .}. Let A and B be integers with ∆ = A − 4B 6= 0. The Lucas sequence un = un(A,B) (n ∈ N) is defined as follows: u0 = 0, u1 = 1, and un...

Monotonicity , Convexity and Symmetric Derivates

If the first lower symmetric derívate of a continuous function is nonnegative, then it is nondecreasing. If the second lower symmetric derívate of a continuous function is nonnegative, then it is convex. In this paper it is shown that if continuity is replaced by Baire one, Darboux in each of these, then the resulting statements are true.

On Nonparametric Tests of Positivity / Monotonicity / Convexity

We consider the problem of estimating the distance from an unknown signal, observed in a white-noise model, to convex cones of positive/monotone/convex functions. We show that, when the unknown function belongs to a Hölder class, the risk of estimating the Lr -distance, 1 ≤ r < ∞, from the signal to a cone is essentially the same (up to a logarithmic factor) as that of estimating the signal its...
